Characteristics of life
We don’t know the exact number of the characteristics of life, and those we do know don’t go in any specific order.
Some characteristics of life:
- Organization: living things are made of cells. Unicellular means made up of one cell. Multicellular means made up of multiple cells.
- Homeostasis: maintaining a regulated balance is so important for many biological processes.
- Metabolism: the chemical reactions in the body’s cells that change food into energy.
- Reproduction: without it, we wouldn’t be able to have more life.
Zygotes: fertilized eggs. - Growth and Development: all living things should grow. They might not grow all the time but they do grow.
- Response to stimuli: internal and external stimuli.
Internal might be the way you know your’re hungry: your brain sends a signal to your stomach.
External: your response to something scary. Plants responding to light is also a version of stimulus. - Evolution: over a period of time, evolution can help make species stronger and more adapted to live in their environment. Although it happens over a very long span of time, it is a characteristic of life.
Fun Fact:
Viruses are not classified as living because they need a host to reproduce.
