Biology: The Amoeba Sisters: Theory and Law

Some words used casually have different meanings than when used scientifically.

Why do worms come out of their holes when it rains even though it makes them drown? It’s easier for them to move on wet surfaces to find new habitat or mate.

DEFINITIONS

Theory: when speaking casually refers to an opinion, hunch, or guess but in the realm of science, a theory is an explanation supported by scientific evidence, a hypothesis that has been tested repeatedly.

Scientific Law: describes what happens.

Scientific Theory: explains why it happens

Gamete:  a reproductive cell of a plant or animal. In humans it’s the eggs and sperm.

Gene: The basic unit of heredity passed from parent to child. The features passed from parent to child.

Allele: the alternative form or versions of a gene. Different alleles of the eye color would be blue, green, or brown.

Phenotype: an individual’s observable traits.

Gregor Mendel: (07-22-1822/01-06-1884)
Through his work on pea plants, he discovered the fundamental laws of inheritance. He deduced that genes come in pairs and are inherited as distinct units, one from each parent.

Mendel’s laws:
1.Law of segregation of genes: only one of the two gene copies present in an organism is distributed to each gamete (egg or sperm cell) that it makes, and the allocation of the gene copies is random.
2. Law of independent assortment: states that the alleles of two (or more) different genes get sorted into gametes independently of one another. In other words, the allele a gamete receives for one gene does not influence the allele received for another gene.
3. Law of dominance:  states that: “When parents with pure, contrasting traits are crossed together, only one form of trait appears in the next generation. The hybrid offspring will exhibit only the dominant trait in the phenotype.” Law of dominance is known as the first law of inheritance.

That’s all for the Amoeba Sisters, Theory and Law! Hope you learned something, and have a wonderful day. God bless! <3
